What's in the sauce?
All topical products manufactured by BOFA Therapeutics are formulated with a moringa oil base, essential oil blends, and isolated cannabinoids (that means BOFA topicals are non-psychoactive, containing 0.0% THC). - Sidenote: Full-spectrum CBD or CBG products contain trace amounts of other cannabinoids, like THC, as well as flavonoids and terpenes, which are beneficial compounds that provide unique scents and flavors. CBD and CBG isolate products like BOFA, on the other hand, go through further refining so they only contain CBD/CBG. CBD and CBG isolate is therefore a great option for those who want to experience the potential effects of these cannabinoids without the presence of THC.
Our product line also employs a proprietary transdermal uptake system of botanically derived organic terpenes to aid in absorption of the oil through the stratum corneum (outermost) skin layers, thereby increasing the bioavailability of the cannabinoids.
Let’s talk moringa
The moringa tree grows in dry, tropical, and subtropical environments. The tree produces seeds that are crushed for their prized oil, cold-pressed in a similar manner to that of hemp seed oil. Moringa oil is edible (although we should note: BOFA products are not) and contains a high concentration of oleic acid, behenic acid (“Ben” oil), and vitamins C and E. Due to its composition, moringa oil absorbs completely, delivering vital nutrients to the body. Along with its incredible hydrating properties, the oil also has anti-inflammatory and antiseptic properties. It has a wide range of practical applications — from its use as a nutritional supplement against malnutrition, to its inclusion in cosmetics. In fact, a notable cosmetic benefit of moringa is that the oil does not leave stains, making it well suited for body application.
You and me ain’t nothin’ but mammals
The Endocannabinoid System (ECS), which is unique to mammals, plays a major modulatory role in the function of the brain, endocrine system, and immune tissues. The distinguishing factor in cannabinoid acceptance by the body is a matter of reception. CB1 receptors are located in the brain and throughout the body, whereas CB2 receptors are found mostly in the immune and gastrointestinal system. Although CB2 receptors do exist in the brain, they are not as active there compared to the CB1. CB1 receptors therefore modulate neurotransmission — and its activation is stimulated by the binding of predominantly tetrahydrocannabinol (THC). CB2 receptors modulate immune responses such as inflammation in peripheral tissue.
Both cannabidiol (CBD) and cannabigerol (CBG) — BOFA's two cannabinoid protagonists — target and bind to CB1 and CB2 receptors (with the highest affinity for the CB2). An agonist is a chemical that binds to a receptor and activates that receptor to produce a biological response. CBD is actually the most studied CB2 receptor agonist. CBG is the mother cannabinoid to both CBD and THC. Having no psychoactive effects of its own, its use on its own and/or in combination with other cannabinoids, especially, can bring a holistic approach to therapeutics.
Oils, essentially
BOFA’s unique combination of scent-blends were chosen with their historically healing characteristics in mind.
- The brightly tart aroma of Blood Orange essential oil [Citrus sinensis] facilitates an instant mood lift and can reduce stress levels, particularly on a neural level. This oil, like others below, reduces inflammation in addition to muscle and joint pain.
- Cinnamon essential oil [Cinnamomum zeylanicum] has been reputed to diminish feelings of depression and anxiety, and to improve sleep. When applied topically, cinnamon boasts a host of remedial benefits to the skin, including revived tone, enhanced circulation, and anti-aging effects — presumably due to its natural antibacterial and antifungal properties.
- Clove essential oil [Syzygium aromaticum] is commonly used as an antimicrobial aid in the battle against bacteria. Taken from the flowering buds of the clove tree, this gloaming, spicy evergreen is a notable muscle pain reliever and can quiet respiratory conditions like asthma and cough.
- Eucalyptus essential oil [Eucalyptus citriodora] can clear your sinuses and/or alleviate sinus pressure, relieve sore muscles, and combat stress. It can even augment mental clarity while simultaneously promoting the relaxation of tense facial muscles.
- Lavender essential oil [Lavandula angustifolia] promotes relaxation and is known to aid in the treatment of anxiety, fungal infections, allergies, depression, insomnia, eczema, and nausea. Lavender oil has many inherent uses for treating the skin. It naturally reduces inflammation, lessens pain, and acts as an exfoliant to the skin’s surface.
- Lemongrass essential oil [Cymbopogon citratus] — derived from the leaves and stalks of this tropical, grassy plant — emits a powerful citrus scent and likewise has potent antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, antifungal, and astringent capabilities.
- The refreshing properties of Peppermint essential oil [Mentha × piperita] help soothe itchy skin and provide mild antimicrobial support. Did you know peppermint is actually a hybrid mint — a cross between spearmint and watermint — and is one of the oldest herbs to be used in both culinary and medicinal products?
- Rosemary essential oil [Rosmarinus officinalis L.] is often utilized as a mild pain reliever that can also reduce stress. Rosemary, a shrubby herb belonging to the mint family, can be used to reduce inflammation in joints and increase circulation in the hands and feet.
